WORKSHOP: States, Skills and Composition in Contact Improvisation, Cape Town, SA

March 3 @ 10:00 am - March 4 @ 5:00 pm

A weekend intensive with international teachers Andrew Harwood (CA) and Jori Snell (DK), Saturday & Sunday the 3rd & 4th of March!!
Contact improvisation is a spontaneous physical play between two people plunging into the world of sensation and imagination. Through the continuous exchange of weight, the free-play with equilibrium, the exploitation of momentum and the savoring of stillness, an energy exchange is generated that leaves participants informed, centered and enlivened.

The workshop will include two complementary sessions a day:

Morning sessions will begin with various somatic and release approaches leading us to a luscious internal experience of our weight in motion while including an awareness of the total environment we share with others and also integrate hands-on work to develop a heightened sense of touch. Subsequently we will explore various contact skills such as rolling smoothly, falling safely, lifting easily, being upside down, as well as giving, supporting and transferring weight effortlessly, gently leading us into open dancing.

Afternoon sessions will provide an opportunity to integrate our heightened states of being and our contact techniques through the practice of various improvisational dance structures. Researched material and immediate choices are applied to the art of instantaneous composition through the experimentation of duet, small group and large ensemble work. Attentiveness and presence are developed throughout in order to work in an energetic state of physical alertness.

This workshop is open for adults of all ages with curious bodies and open minds.
